In a fluid-operated ram assembly for a powerassisted steering system of a motor vehicle, ship or aircraft, pressure fluid is supplied through a port 52 to move the double-acting piston 30 to the left in Fig. 1 until the projecting stem 37 of a poppet valve head 38 abuts a fixed projection 27 to unseat the valve ball 43 to allow fluid to leak through the piston 30 and passage(s) 10 to a port 8, thereby reducing the pressure on the piston but still maintaining it in position, a further poppet valve 43a in series with the valve ball 43 being held open by fluid pressure (supplied via the port 52) as the piston moves to, and stays at, the left, but being closed by its spring 44a when fluid is supplied through the port 8 to act on the piston 30 to return it, and the ball 43 is still unseated. The projection 27 is on a sleeve member 15 adjustably screwed on to the casing 4. A ball or lug 1 is connected to a ball or forked housing of a steering linkage, and the member 2 is pivoted to a fixed component of the vehicle. |
