Measurements of the distance between the nozzle and the plate is subject to faults when the electrode projects over the edge of the plate. The electrodes are so arranged that the distance between the proportion of their areas projecting over the edge is constant and independent of this distance. The signal from the correcting electrode is proportional to the control difference and through feeding via a suitable adjusting unit in the control circuit corrects the control signal from the measuring electrode. The process allows accurate operation of measuring systems near the workpiece edge where the projecting electrode gives false signals.
