The housing is of rectangular cross-section and the tubes are arranged therein so that the distances between adjacent tube centres and between tube centres and the inside of the housing are constant. Deflector plates 10, 10' are provided in the housing and are so arranged that the medium to be cooled, in passing from one end of the housing to the other between the tubes, passes alternately parallel to and perpendicular to the tubes. The ratio of the projected areas F P , F S for passage of the medium respectively parallel to and perpendicular to the tubes is substantially 1:1.
