Metal extrusion press for continuous operation - with simple removal of residual shell in extruder barrel and the tail end of the billet

A charging device feeds a billet into the main extruder barrel and a ram drives the billet through a die held in a mounting plate. A holder is also provided with a chamber for retaining the residual tail-end of the billet. The novelty is that the ram is fitted with a pressure disc pushing the billet through the die; the disc consists of sections joined by a ring-shaped recess fitted with axial ribs which shear the shell of material adhering to the bore of the extruder barrel. The disc is pref. fixed on the end of the ram, and one pref. disc design uses two ring-shaped recesses, one behind the other. Pref. the die mounting plate can be moved at 90 degrees to the press axis to shear the extrudate from the tail-end which can either be followed by a new billet or removed. The length of the extruded prod. is large, and the extrusion cycles can be continuously repeated and automatically controlled.
