Metal plate with stiffening rib - has rib welded to stub formed integrally on plate by rolling

The metal plate with a stiffening rib is made by forming the plate (1) with an integral rib stub (2) and then welding the rib (4) to the stub by a butt welding process. The height (h) of the stub is pref. not less than thickness (S) of the plate. The rib may have recesses along its edge adjacent the stub so that only the projections defined between the recesses are welded to the stub. The stubs are pref. produced by a rolling process. This facilitates welding and provides a strong root for the rib.
