The shift control means comprise a plurality of low speed switches Qa...Qd connected to the buses and driven by a further switch Q S and the output of the shift register 4. By making the voltages on the write and shift arrays w, a, b, c relatively low, transistor switches with a low voltage rating can be used in the write and shift drive circuitry 8, 11. The pulses V YS on the Y array are provided by transistors Qy 1 , Qy 2 forming the discharge control means 7, 12. When these are off a potential of about ¢ V YS is applied via resistors R1, R2. Using high and low speed transistors pulse trains V A ...V D with mitral and final pulses of reduced magnitude can be obtained Fig. 7 (not shown).
