<p>1374657 Signal display device S B DUNNE 11 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 1296/72 Heading G5C A changeable message highway sign machine 10 includes at least one horizontal rotor 22, 24 carrying messages on the faces 26 of prisms coaxial and rotatable with the rotors, which are rotated, so as to display different messages through apertures 18, 20 in the front face 16 of the machine, by electric motor 68 via transmission 70, rotor 22 being driven from rotor 24 by chain 80 and sprockets 82, 84, and a telemetering unit 180 signals the position of the rotor to a remote control point. The rotors are held so that the message bearing faces 26 are registered with the corresponding aperture 18 or 20 by means of cams 86, 88 on the rotor shafts, in the form of multilobed discs with indentations 90 which are engaged by cam followers 96, 104 when the messages are in position. The cam followers are carried on arms 100, 106 pivoted about pins 102, 108 and are interconnected by arm 110 so that they move together. To free the rotors so as to be able to change the message, solenoid 118 is energized simultaneously with motor 68, lifting the cam followers and disengaging them from their respective cams. The device may be operated remotely, and in case of power failure the unit may be driven by low voltage motor 182, powered by accumulators, or manually by shaft 184. The message-bearing faces 26 being shown fit closely into the apertures 18, 20 and flush with the face 16 of the machine. Weatherproofing means includes heating elements 162, 168, 172, 174 provided along the edges of apertures 18, 20 to prevent the faces 26 being frozen solid with face 16, and water diverting lips 160, 166 provided along the upper edges of apertures 18, 20. In a modification each rotor is rotated individually by its own motor.</p> |
