1457886 Erecting display and transport cartons BOWATER PACKAGING Ltd 13 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 42994/73 Heading B5D [Also in Division B8] An apparatus for erecting a display and transport carton blank comprises pivotal folding members 33 which can pivot to fold divider panels D of the blank into back-to-back relationship about a fold line F and move the blank past stationary folding plates 21 to fold up side panels S, and further stationary folding surfaces 53, 54, 55 which fold up side flaps T, glue flaps A and end flaps E around base panels B upon vertical downward movement of the folding members 33 and hence the blank. Each folding member 33 includes two plates 37, 39 arranged at right angles to one another, so that after pivoting of the members 33 about pivots 35 the plates 37 lie against the divider panels D and the plates 39 lie against the base panels B. Pivoting of the folding members 33 is effected by a piston and cylinder assembly 27 which can vertically reciprocate a cross-member 29 pivotally connected to the folding members 33 by links 45. A subframe 25 which carries the folding members 33, can be vertically reciprocated by a further piston and cylinder assembly 61, 63 to cause the folding members 33 to push the blank past the stationary folding surfaces. In an alternative embodiment pivoting and vertical movement of the folding members may be effected by a single two-stage piston and cylinder assembly. In operation blanks are fed from a stack past adhesive applicators to a position below the folding members 33, folded as described above, and then discharged from the apparatus on to a conveyor 13 by a transfer device 11 through gates 73 which are opened automatically when the transfer device 11 is operated. Bars 71 maintain the carton erect during the period between retraction of the folding members 33 and discharge of the carton. |
