[Also in Division G5] Gaseous discharge panels 14, 22, sandwich X-drive electrodes 18 and have respective sets of Y-drive electrodes 10, 26 positioned on their outer faces, the gases of panels 14, 22 being ignited to emit light of distinct colours, thus providing a polychromatic display. Panels 12, 16, 24 are insulators. By means of oscillator 30 and phase-shifter 36, waveforms A and C (Fig. 2) are constantly applied to electrodes 10 and 26, respectively; information-bearing waveform B is applied to selected electrodes 18, the respective gases igniting when voltages Vf 2 and Vf 1 result. The formation of wall charges provides a memory capability. The elementary gas cells may be physically isolated or (as shown) provided merely by the intersection of the X and Y electrodes. |
