To seal the door of a horizontal coke oven chamber against its frame, a fluid sealing compound is introduced into the peripheral cavity left between steel sections of the surrounding structure. When the door has been opened at the end of each coking cycle, the solidified cpd. is removed by mechanical means and renewed after the door has been closed. Specifically the sealing cpd. is an aq. paste of loam or clay which is made up with ammoniacal water. Pref. the loam or clay is predried and the ammoniacal water then added to it, espec. in an amt. 5-40 wt.% (based on the dry wt.).
