Detection of components in liquid stream - using electrokinetic effect to generate electric potential (CS 27.8.76)

Liquid flows over the surface of a measurement section to establish a radial velocity gradient in the liquid which in turn induces an electric current. This can be detected and evaluated. System has a holding vessel for the liquid under test which is joined to the measurement section. Below the latter is a collection vessel. There is a detection electrode mounted before, in or after the measurement section. This is connected via an amplifier circuit to an indicator or recorder. Arrangement is used with liquid chromatography columns where the presence of various components in the carrier stream must be detected quantitatively in succession. Method avoids costly and complicated devices.
