The web printing apparatus has a roller squeegee supported non rotatably on a rotatable shaft and may print with a cylindrical on flat stencil. The end of the squeegee shaft projects axially beyond the edge of the stencil and is operatively connected to two drive systems. One of these drives the squeegee at the same speed as the stencil whilst the other can be used to drive the squ eegee at a speed which is faster than that of the stencil. This allows the amount of ink applied to be varied between wider limits than for example friction driven squeegee printing rolls.
