A rotor on a driving shaft enclosed by a diffusor pipe for mixing air or fumes into a fluid in the open or in large vessels, esp. for aerating sewage, is designed like a double flow pump wheel. Radial vanes are arranged on a disc so as to set up an upper gas flow and a lower liquid flow. In the direction of rotation, the vanes are curved backwards to a point extending beyond the circumference of the rotor disc, and they are inclined relatively to their horizontal axes so that, esp. in the zone of the free ends, the lower edge of the vane lags behind its upper edge. The design intensifies the mixing of the larger size gas bubbles rising through the fluid and thus increases the efficiency of the gas supplied. The vanes create not simply a radial flow but also an axially downwards flow increasing the length of the paths followed by gas and fluid.
