The control console for a teaching device has a transparent front plate (3), divided into a number of similar zones (5), behind each of which is at least one light source, which is individually energised. The switches for the light sources are arranged in the same order as the zones (5) of the front plate (3). Each of the zones (5) displays at least one symbol or receive a symbol carrier, the symbols having a different opacity to the front plate (3) and/or the symbol carrier. Nine zones (5) may be provided in the front plate (3), arranged in three rows of three, with each of the switches at the side of the associated zone.
