The motorised hoe has a number of blades (5) rotating on a horizontal axle (4), and a handle by which the blades are pushed forward and steered. Some means is needed to keep the blades working at the proper depth and prevent them from riding on the surface, especially of hard ground. A coulter slicing through the ground behind the rotating tool is liable to catch on stones and weeds. A smooth wheel leaves a rut, which may be an undesirable drainage channel on a hillside, so a spoked wheel (7), is used which will stride over stones and not leave ruts. It is held on its axle by a spring whose tension can be varied, altering the friction and allowing the tool to move forward more or less easily, as the particular terrain requires.
|
