<p>The firebox (1) has a lining or refractory material (3) and a grate replaced by an oxy-hydrogen burner (2) supplied (9) from storage bottles which replace the coal in the tender. Draught for the gases is generated by conventional means in the smoke box (5). Additional air is drawn into the bottom of the firebox through a pipe (6) from a preheater (7). A valve (27) shuts off this pipe during lighting up, when air from a blower is used to provide both the draught and the oxygen to burn the hydrogen. The energy conversion can be carried out by firing an oxyhydrogen burner directly into the steam drum, or by the use of fuel cells or 'cold' hydrogen oxydation devices to generate electricity.</p> |
