The small thermal image generator, for locating IR heat sources, has the scene viewed by an image intensifier scanned line by line using an optical system (2, 14) to reflect IR light. This includes a fixed mirror at right angles to the optical system. An IR detector (19) controls a source (15) whose visible light is picked up by the image intensifier (OB). The light source is located to one side and is reflected by a prism (17) to the detector which is positioned behind a window in a periodically-pivoting mirror (SL).
