Waste waters contg. biodegradable organic materials are purified by using the waste as culture medium for microorganisms, which are maintained in the exponential growth phase. The microorganisms are those which may be ingested by protozoa and are cultured until they form a biomass which is used as culture medium for the protozoa. The obtd. protozoal biomass is then separated from the purified waters. Pref. the microorganisms are aerobic bacteria and/or yeasts, partic. Pseudomonas sp. and Brevibacterium sp. bacteria and Torula yeasts. The protozoa are pref. ciliate and are esp. Tetrahymena pyriformis and/or Colpidium camphilum. The protozoal biomass is useful as a source of protein, for human (sic) or animal feeds, and is obtd. without prodn. of an activated sludge of bacteria. The process does not lead to a loss of accumulated solar energy c. f. prior processes.
|
