1469818 Acetylene derivatives HOECHST AG 18 April 1974 [21 April 1973] 17031/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula where X is a group of the formula in which R4 is C 1 to C 4 alkyl or phenyl; n is zero or 1 and, if n is zero, A is naphthyl, anthryl, phenanthryl, pyrenyl, in which Y is -CH=, -N= or -NR7+=T- in which R7 is hydrogen or C 1 to C 4 alkyl optionally substituted by hydroxy, cyano or phenyl and T is a colourless anion, Z is -O-, -S- or -NR8- in which R8 has the same meanings as R7, R5 and R6 are each hydrogen, halogen, C 1 to C 4 alkyl, C 1 to C 4 alkoxy or phenyl or together R5 and R6 form a fused benzene ring; B has the same meanings as A or is phenyl; and if n is 1, A can also be phenyl, cyano, -COOR1 (in which R1 is C 1 to C 4 alkyl or phenyl optionally substituted by halogen, hydroxy, C 1 to C 4 alkoxy, amino, mono- or di- C 1 to C 4 alkylamino, or tri-C 1 to C 4 alkylammonium) or -CONR2R3 (in which R2 and R3 are each hydrogen or C 1 to C 4 alkyl or R2 and R3 together with the nitrogen atom are morpholino or piperidino); and A and B are optionally substituted by halogen, C 1 to C 4 alkyl, C 1 to C 4 alkoxy, cyano, -COOR1, -CONR2,R3, -SO 2 OR1, sulpho, nitro, amino, mono- or di-C 1 to C 4 alkylamino, tri-C 1 to C 4 alkylammonium, C 1 to C 4 alkanoylamino, benzoylamino, C 1 to C 4 alkanoyloxy, benzoyloxy or benzocumarinyl. They may be prepared by reacting a vinyl sulphone of the formula wherein R is C 1 to C 4 alkyl or phenyl optionally substituted by halogen, nitro, C 1 to C 4 alkoxy or C 1 to C 4 alkanoylamino, with a stoichiometric amount of a strong base in a polar solvent at from - 30‹ to + 150‹ C. The compounds of Formula I are optical brightening agents.
