<p>1488719 Pocket inhalers CIBA-GEIGY AG 24 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 55674/74 Heading A5T [Also in Division B2] A pocket inhaler for spraying liquid or powder comprises an air compressing piston pump 12, and a cartridge 10 for liquid or powder having an inlet at its base mounted on a hollow stem 11 projecting from the pump cylinder 13 and a discharge orifice in its upper end, entry of air into the cartridge from the pump being prevented by an obturator positioned across a compressed air outlet of the pump until a predetermined pressure is attained when the pump piston 14 nears the end of a compression stroke. The obturator may comprise an elastic resilient diaphragm 21 having a slit 25, which slit opens at said predetermined pressure to allow compressed air to flow through the cartridge and expel the liquid or powder therein as a spray. A spring 18 returns the piston to its position remote from the diaphragm. The inhaler may be recharged by loading a new cartridge on the pump stem. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the slit diaphragm is replaced by a diaphragm (43) having an aperture (45) in which a plug (42) is movable. The plug normally closes the aperture but on pushing the piston inwards, an abutment (40) on the piston face is operable to displace the plug from the aperture to allow the flow of compressed air therethrough. Alternatively, the cartridge (110) Fig. 4, (not shown), and the pump may be formed integrally and disposed of after a single use, in which case no spring is required. The obturator is then provided by a diaphragm (33) which is ruptured by a perforator member (36) carried on the piston face, towards the end of the compression stroke. In each embodiment, a cap is provided to fit over the discharge end of the cartridge prior to use. The main parts of the inhaler, except the spring, may be moulded from thermoplastic material.</p> |
