The building tile for covering wall or ground surfaces has four sides (2-5) but may have other shapes. The tile may be of stone, moulded or injection-moulded material, such as concrete, ceramic, glass and any other suitable material. The visible surface (6) of the tile bears a design which is formed partly of an area which is lower than the flat surface (6) and is positioned so that it connects with similar areas on adjacent tiles (1a-1h). The design can incorporate a number of grooves (7-9) which cut the circumference of the tile, for instance on two consecutive sides (2, 3), dividing each of these sides into four equal lengths. The arrangement of the grooves on the tiles enables the tiles to be placed in two different relative positions, while still preserving continuity between the grooves from one tile to the next.
