<p>Improving the filterability of a heteropolysaccharide formed by Xanthomonas bacteria (Xanthomonas gum XG) comprises forming a soln. of the XG in an aq. medium contg. >=0.5 wt. % salt, and heating the soln. at >100 degrees C until the XG can more easily be sepd. from bacterial cells and other debris present in the soln. Heating is terminated before the XG loses its thickening properties. The product is esp. useful as a thickener for water-flooding media used in sec. oil recovery operations it can also be used as a suspending agent in foods, drinks, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The heat-treated solns. can be filtered at high speed without blocking the filter. The filtered solns. do not cause plugging when injected into oil-bearing formations.</p> |
