A fluid control valve has a spool longitudinally movable within a cavity of the valve body and provided with two pairs of closure surfaces one of which contacts associated valve seats when the spool is in one of two longitudinal positions and the other of which contacts further associated valve seats when the spool is in its other longitudinal position, at least one closure surface of each pair engaging an inner surface of and overlapping its associated valve seat and the closure surfaces being so formed that when the spool is in either of its longitudinal positions the fluid forces in a portion of the cavity between the contacted valve seats exert no net longitudinal force on the spool.
