1522768 Righting sailing boats K F GRAM 26 Nov 1976 [2 Dec 1975] 49451/76 Heading B7V To right a capsized sailing boat, its mast or sail associated therewith has a float adjacent its top and the mast is pivotable about a fore and aft axis to either side through an angle of more than 90 degrees by means of a drive arrangement which when the boat is capsized causes the hull to return to the upright position whilst the float lies in the water. Thereafter the drive arrangement is used to pivot the mast upwards from the horizontal "capsized position". As described the drive arrangement for a dinghy comprises a worm and screw mechanism 18 actuable by crank handles 19 and for a catamaran it may comprise a similar mechanism or a capstan positioned on the deck and about which side shrouds of the mast are wound. |
