An electrical rotary switch can be operated manually for use with home appliances such as washing machines and electric cookers. The torque to rotate the switch is low and the switch can also be operated directly without gear train by an electric motor. The switch has a rotaring spindle (15) onto which are monted segments (10) of ferromagnetic material. It also has an arm (13) which rocks about a pin (14). One end of the arm (13) has a magnet (20) and the other end has a moving contact (16). The moving contact (16) can be displaced between two fixed contacts (17). Rotation of the segments (10) attracts the magnet (20) up or down, and rocks the arm (13). Rocking of the arm (13) gives a switching between the moving contact (16) and the fixed contacts (17).
