The disc brake mechanism is suitable for pneumatic operation on heavy lorries. Such actuation usually provides rotation of a shaft by a connecting rod. A hub can slide freely at right angles to the plane of the brake disc in a U shaped housing which straddles the disc. Brake pads are disposed on either side of the disc in the usual way. One is fixed to the sliding hub which moves axially under the action of the coarse threaded screw (44) rotated by the shaft. The screw is mounted in a bearing (53) fixed to the body which cannot move axially itself, except in the restricted way allowed by the floating mounting of the housing. Wear of the linings is compensated by resetting the screw position relative to the shaft. |
