Alumina-base catalyst carrier is produced by impregnating an active alumina variety (X, O, delta u or gamma-form) with a slat capable of reacting with alumina to form a spinel structure, and firing to convert the alumina into the alpha-form. The salt is pref. a nitrate, sulphate, or chloride of Mg, Ni, Co, Mn or Zn. The catalyst carrier acquires the toughness and refractivess of alpha-alumina whilst retaining the large pore volume and specific surface area of the active alumina. The product is not brittle, even when kept under water for a prolonged period of time (in contrast to the conventional alpha-alumina). The product can also withstand prolonged vibrations when used as a 'petrol-reforming' catalyst for internal combustion engines.
