A process for stabilising and consolidating residues consisting primarily of metal cpds., esp. residues contg. jarosites, goethites, Fe oxides, hydroxides, and sulphates, is described. These residues, with a solids content >=55 wt.%, initially incoherent, are mixed with the stabiliser to form a mechanically stable solid prod. which is inert to the dissolving action of H2O. This allows the prod. to be stored in a heap exposed to the weather without risk of pollution. The heap of solids is only superficially penetrated by rain. The outer layer maintains its strength and the water evaporates quickly after the rain has stopped due to the large surface area of the particles. CO2 in the atmos. has a stabilising effect on the outer layer of solids since it converts active CaO to carbonate. The stable mass will not slide, flow or creep. The process can be used for ferriferous residues produced by pptn. of Fe from solns. of Fe sulphate and Zn sulphate in hydrometallurgical treatment as well as FeSO4 residues and other residues contg. Fe sulphates, oxides or hydroxides.
|
