Waveguide layer or strip in doped substrate - produced by reducing refractive index of mantle by ion implantation doping

Waveguide layer or strip in a doped substrate, pref. glass, has a mantle of lower refractive index than the waveguide on at least one side, the refractive index of the mantle being reduced by doping. The mantle pref. surrounds all the waveguide, except any exposed surface. Good waveguide properties are obtd. and it is possible to construct waveguides with a small radius of curvature.
