A handling appliance for the lids of coke oven charging holes includes a suspended platform on which a lifting magnet can be turned by a motor drive. The platform is subdivided by two parallel pivot joints and carries two vertical gantries with a coupling rod between them. This facilitates the compensation of any difference in elevation between the charging car carrying the appliance and the charging hole lid. The platform part with the magnet can be lowered for this purpose and for an adjustment of the force exerted on the lid.
