The safety device is fitted to a letter box with a posting slot enclosed by a pivoting flap. Behind the posting slot in a box shaped space is a loose floor rotatably mounted on an axis. The axis of the loose floor is parallel with the axis of the posting slot flap and the floor is coupled by a linkage to it. When the posting slot is open the floor moves downwards and rests on opposite wall of the box shaped space. With the posting slot closed by the flap the floor moves upwards and its bottom part forms an open slot with the opposite wall of the box shaped space.
