The portable power unit for a glider has the (streamlined) engine nacelle (5) mounted on an inverted-Y shaped pylon (4) also streamlined, whose feet rest on the wing roots (3). Straps (10) with bolts and nuts (11) at the rear secure the assembly to the glider. Shaped inserts can be fitted between the pylon feet and the wing to permit use of the assembly, without modification, on gliders with differing wing shapes. A fuel tank (7) and room for stowage (8) e.g. of a batter - is provided in the pylon. The nose cone (9) of the engine nacelle can also be used to store fuel. To facilitate transportation, e.g. to a glider inadvertently in a situation where own power for takeoff is desirable - the unit can be made up of a number of sections, conventionally joined together.
