The drum is rotated sufficiently fast to create an air cushion between it and the web 4. The drum is axially longer than the web 4 is wide. In operation the web is intermittently moved and the area of the web wrapped about the drum 1 is scanned by axial and rotational movement of the drum 1. The web 4 may have an electrically insulating recording surface and conductive backing. More than one web may be wrapped about the drum, Fig. 6 (not shown). If more than one electrode is present on the drum they may be arranged helically.
