Cpds. of formula: (where R and R1 are H or 1-10C alkyl and at least one of R1 and R is alkyl), are prepd. by reacting with a hydrocarbon of formula: with an oxygen-contg. gas in a mole ratio of oxygen to hydrocarbon of at least 1:10 in the presence of a catalytic combination of 0.009-5 wt.% of - (where R2-R7 are 1-5C n- or iso-alkyl) and 0.1-10wt.% of an alkali metal halide selected from KF, KBr, KI, NACl, NaF and KCl at 5-350 degrees (pref. 175-300) degrees F, under a pressure of 0.1-1000 (pref. 0.5-25) atmos. Using this method, the rate of reaction is significantly increased.
