1475244 Fuel elements BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 24 Sept 1975 [24 Feb 1975] 39136/75 Heading G6C Means for selectively inserting and withdrawing one or more fuel rods into and from a fuel element cellular grid structure (Fig. 1) comprises a long thin bar 21 (Fig. 2) having transverse stubs 21A, B, C which is inserted into the gaps 20 between mutually perpendicular grid structure plates 10, 11 and then turned through 90 degrees to cause the stubs 21A, B, C to extend across these gaps 20. The ends of the stubs thus engage the adjacent portions of the plates 10, 11 and pressing of the stubs against the plate portions through the application of appropriate force in a longitudinal direction relative to the bar 21 deflects the plates 10, 11 through a sufficient distance to enable fuel rods to be inserted into, or withdrawn from, respective cells. After rod insertion, the force applied to the bar is released to enable the plates to relax and engage the fuel rods. The bar is rotated once more through 90 degrees and withdrawn from the grid structure. A similar procedure is employed to withdraw fuel rods from the grid structure. |
