The purpose is to provide means of treating and consolidating a ground surface area, covered in soil or grass, so that it can be stabilised to support foot or vehicle traffic, without preventing the growth of grass. This involves a number of rings (11), which may be made of asbestos cement, or other rigid material resistant to wear and corrosion. These are joined to each other in a spatial arrangement, and laid on the ground surface, pref clipped together in groups which may be held together by a strip (17) stretched round the periphery. The rings may also be arranged as a mat, retained in position by a number of wires woven between them.
