1457032 Removing excess monomer GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 9 Jan 1974 [26 March 1973] 01133/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division B1] A stripping process for removing volatile material, such as styrene, from an aqueous dispersion of a polymer, such as a styrene-butadiene latex comprises injecting the aqueous dispersion and a stripping gas, such as steam, into an unrestricted contacting tube 11 to provide a high velocity mixture within the tube; maintaining the pressure above atmospheric within the contacting tube for a time sufficient to permit absorption of the volatile material from the dispersion to the stripping gas, discharging the vaporous mixture from the contacting tube through a flow throttling nozzle into a post-contacting tube 18 maintained at a pressure substantially below atmospheric, discharging the mixture from the post-contacting tube into a separator chamber 20 maintained at a sufficient pressure below atmospheric to flash volatiles from the mixture and separately removing said flashed volatiles and stripping gas and said aqueous dispersion from said separator. The mixture discharged through the nozzle may be directed against a baffle.
|
