1402494 Optical glass fibres SIEMENS AG 21 May 1973 [13 July 1972] 24033/73 Heading C1M To produce a light conducting glass fibre consisting of a core and a casing, a core glass rod 1 is heated to a temperature just below its fusion temperature, the heated rod is coated with molten glass 2, the refractive of which is lower than that of the material of the cord rod 1 and the coated rod 1, 4 is drawn to a fibre. The heated rod 1 may be submerged into and withdrawn from a glass melt 2 heated at 3 or, as in Fig. 2 may be drawn upwardly through the melt 2, or, as in Fig. 3, the rod 1 is rotated as it is drawn horizontally below the melt 2. The core 1 may be of quartz glass doped with TiO 2 and the glass melt may be pure quartz glass, the coating taking place under reduced pressure.
|
