The head of a cylindrical reactor vessel is removed by special equipment which is attached to it after external connections to the mantle and the head have been dismantled. A new head is fitted and firmly secured in place or the original head is restored after maintainance and repair work on it. The special equipment comprises a circular body adapted to the external shape of the vessel or the head and is provided with all the necessary power tools for the operations required. The circular body is assembled round the head of the vessel so that the required operations for dismantling can be carried out, and is removed when the work on the head is finished. Makes it unnecessary for maintenance personnel to be close to a reactor vessel such as a heat exchanger for a liq. Na cooled nuclear reactor, or at least reduces the duration of their presence to a min.
