1419459 Olefin polymerization catalyst NAPHTACHIMIE 25 July 1973 [26 July 1972] 35404/73 Heading C3P An olefin having the formula CH 2 = CHR in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a C 1-8 alkyl radical is homopolymerized or copolymerized using a solid catalyst comprising a compound of magnesium and of at least one transition metal selected from titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten which has been prepared by the reaction of an organomagnesium compound, a monohalogenated hydrocarbon and a halogenated and/or organic derivative of the transition metal in a state of valency at least equal to four, to produce a solid compound of magnesium and the transition metal in which the transition metal is in a lower valency than in its halogenated and/or organic derivative, and then bringing the solid magnesium and transition metal compound resulting from the preceding reaction into contact with an oxidizing agent to increase the state of valency of the transition metal, and a co-catalyst comprising one or more organometallic compounds of one or more metal of group II and/or III. In the examples the catalysts are prepared from n-butyl magnesium chloride, n-butyl chloride, titanium tetrachloride, n-propyl titanate, ethyl magnesium chloride and vanadium tetrachloride in the presence of iodine and n-heptane and using air, oxygen, iodine and chlorine, as oxidizing agents. Ethylene and propylene are polymerized in the presence of these catalysts, n-heptane, triisobutylaluminium, hydrogen and diethyl-aluminium chloride.
|
