The equipment is for tapping into a pipe carrying fluid under pressure. There is no loss of fluid during the piercing operation, and when finished, the equipment remains in position as a tap. The body of the tap (2) is integral with the clamp (5) holding it on to the pipe (4), and contains a rotating sleeve (3) sealed (9) against the pipe. A hole (6) in this sleeve becomes aligned opposite the branch pipe (7) as the sleeve is rotated, and forms the tap valve. The sleeve is conical to retain it in the body, and at the outer end is shouldered internally to hold a similarly shouldered drill bit (12a) passing through O-ring seals (18) in the end of the sleeve. A mating cover (15) on the square tang (16) enables the sleeve and drill to be turned from the outside. The cover is rotated to seal off the branch pipe, then removed, and a drill chuck fixed on the shank. After drilling, the bit is withdrawn and held in position by a split pin (13a). A handwheel may then be fixed to the cover, to complete the tap.
|
