<p>Guide and support roll wih a smooth surface for continuous casting plant, the novelty being that the surface contains grooves completely filled with a materail but leaving surface discontinuities in the roll to release stresses near the roll surface. The roll pref. contains helical groove(s) in which a profile with the same cross-section as the groove(s) is located, the ends of the profile(s) being fixed to the roll beyond its working surface. Alternatively, the grooves may be filled with a metallic agglomerate with feeble adhesion to the groove walls. A further alternative is that the grooves are closed with metal applied by deposition welding to form a longitudinal fissure in the deposit and to leave a space between the deposit and the base of the groove(s). The profile(s) may be hot rolled into groove(s), folowed by machining the roll surface; and the agglomerate can be obtd. by metal spraying, but avoiding good adhesion to the groove walls. The roll surface is provided wtih artificial "fissures" permitting the surface to expand and contract under the thermal stresses etc. involved during casting, and thus preventing the formation of real fissures resulting in roll fracture.</p> |
