The frame (1) of the machine is held by an upright (2) mounted on the end of a crane-jib, and can be tilted by a cylinder (3). A post (4) projecting sideways from the top of the frame (1) guides the tree-trunk. Two grip-claws (5) on the bottom of the frame are pivot-mounted, on pivot-points of the frame, and hydraulic cylinders (11) fixed to a bar (13) on the frame operate the grip-arms (5). Between a plate (14) supporting the post (4) at the top and a plate (15) at the bottom is a pipe (16). Similar vertical pipes (18) are fixed to the ends of the grip-arms (5). Each pipe contains a hydraulic lever (19) which on its piston-rod has a cutter-ratchet (20, 21) to cut off the roots of the tree-trunk (23) enabling it to be lifted from the ground.
