Analgesic Helleborus plant, Ranunculaceae, extract - from roots and stems by alcoholic extraction

Local analgesic compsn. is prepd. by extracting the stems and roots of Helleborus species with 2-3 times their amt. of alcohol at room temp., treating the extract with one tenth is amt. of conc. HCl and filtering. The filtrate is decolourised with active carbon, adjusted to pH 6.5-7 with 10% NaOH and the NaCl concn. adjusted to isotonic with distilled water. The prod. may further be irradiated ultrasonically at 0.005W/cm2 for 1-6 mins. to stabilise it. The compsn. is non-toxic loco dolenti with analgesic, vasodilator, antiseptic, spasmolytic, anabolic effects.
