(2,4,6)-Tribromo-aniline prodn. - by adding bromine soln. to aniline in hydrobromic acid

In a new process for the prepn. of 2,4,6-tribromo-aniline (I) from aniline and Br2 in aq. soln. the aniline is dissolved in hydrobromic acid and to its soln. there is slowly added a soln. of Br2 in hydrobromic acid or in glacial acetic acid. (I) is used as an intermediate, e.g. for chemotherapeutic agents, organic dyes, and flameproofing components for plastics. When a soln. of Br2 in aq. HBr is used, (I) is obtd. in practically quantitative yield as pure white crystals (m.pt. 122 degrees, Br content 72.68 wt.%). When Br2 is glacial acetic is used, (I) obtd. is not quite so pure, but the purity is sufficient for certain purposes.
