The walls 7 and 8 are made of carbon, the sleeve 12 of iron and the barrier 11 of waterproof porous material. A packing gland 15 is disposed between the sleeve 12 and well 8. The cooling liquid may be water, an acid or alkaline solution or an organic solvent, e.g. methanol and the inert gas may be N 2 or CO 2 . |
