The choke coil which can be subdivided pref. into a saturated and a not saturated part, lies with the latter part in parallel to a diode with series resistor and a thyristor with series resistor. This facilitates the adjustment of the voltage/current characteristic to the type of sheathed electrode used which may require a sharply drooping characteristic or a hyperbolic curve. Pref. the choke coil is divided into a saturated part and a not saturated part. The latter is shunted by a diode in series with two resistors and by a thyristor in series with two resistors. The two resistors can be bridged by switches. A firing circuit controls the thyristor as a function of the arc voltage. The saturated choke coil ensures reliable re-striking of the arc.
