Solid polymers from a C3 to C5 hydrocarbon fraction containing principally a mixture of at least one conjugated alkadiene, at least one alkene and at least one alkane together with minor amounts of non-conjugated diolefin hydrocarbons isomerizable to 1-alkynes, are made by removing substantially all the diolfin hydrocarbons and any alkynes present and polymerizing the conjugated alkadiene in the presence of an organolithium catalyst and in the presence of the remaining monoolefine and alkane. The hydrocarbon fraction is preferably a C4 hydrocarbon fraction, the conjugated alkadiene is 1,3-butadiene, and the mixture contains one butene and at least one butane, propadiene and 1,2-butadiene, and alkynes. The alkynes are removed by selective hydrogenation and the non-conjugated diolefines by fractional distillation. The purified fraction prior to polymerization may be diluted with n-hexane and if a copolymer is desired, a comonomer such as styrene may be added. A flow-diagram is given of a continuous method for making the polymers. |
