Casting plant using inert gas distributor - to protect stream of molten metal between bottom-pour ladle and mould

Casting plant uses a gas distributor (I) to protect the stream of molten metal via an inert gas, (I) being located between the casting lable and the ingot mould. The novelty is that (I) consists of a material permeable to gas and resistant to high temps. (I) is pref. made of ceramic material, esp. a clay to which particles of highly inflammable substance are added prior to high temp. calcination in the absence of air a porous concrete may be used. The distributor may surround the stream of metal as a concentric annulus, or only partly surround the stream; and can be located under the ladle or on top of the mould via a magnetic retaining plate. Laminar gas flow is pref. employed. (I) is very efficient but simpler and less expensive than conventional distributors, because only gas is used as compared with liq. gas which involves more complicated plant.
