1474441 Dispersed rosin for paper sizing MONSANTO CO 5 Aug 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 34373/74 Heading C4D [Also in Division D1-D2] An aqueous dispersion of rosin material which is stabilized by the presence in the dispersion of an alkali metal or ammonium alkyl benzene sulphonate, may be used for the internal or surface sizing of paper. The dispersion is prepared by emulsifying a mixture of the molten rosin material, alkyl benzene sulphonate and water, and cooling the emulsion below the solidification temperature of the rosin by passage through a heat exchanger under sufficient pressure to prevent the product flashing. The rosin material may be wood rosin, gum rosin or tall oil rosin in a crude or refined state, and the term further includes pure abietic acid, disproportionated, hydrogenated, polymerized and modified and/or fortified rosin. Fortification may be by adducting with maleic anhydride or acid of fumaric acid, and modification by reaction with formaldehyde. A preferred rosin material contains 70% free tall oil rosin and 30% of adducted rosin, and has an acid number of 235. The water is preferably de-ionized. For internal sizing, the dispersion may be added between and including the intake side of the fan pump and head box of a papermaking machine. |
